Introduction to Hydraulic Power Units

Hydraulic Power Packs, also referred to as Hydraulic Power Units (or HPU’s for short) play a critical role in any hydraulic system. Choosing the right partner to design, specify and manufacture a hydraulic power pack is a crucial step.

Zeus Hydratech take great pride in the detailed approach we adopt when designing and manufacturing your hydraulic power pack.  Our experience in this sector is crucial to ensure you receive a beautifully manufactured, reliable and high performing hydraulic power unit.

We’ve broken down key components that are required for a hydraulic power pack, and reviewed the functions and applications for HPU’s.

What Comprises a Hydraulic Power Unit?

A hydraulic power unit is a self-contained system that consists primarily of a motor, a hydraulic pump, and a reservoir. It converts mechanical power into hydraulic energy – a combination of flow and pressure used by a variety of machinery and equipment. Let's break down the components that make up these dynamic units:

  • Motor: This component drives the unit's pump.

  • Hydraulic Pump: The heart of the unit, pumping hydraulic fluid from the reservoir to the system.

  • Reservoir: A tank that holds the hydraulic fluid.

  • Accumulator: This component stores hydraulic energy for later use or to smoothen out pulsations.

  • Filter: Removes contaminants from the hydraulic fluid to protect the system and ensure efficient operation.

  • Cooler and Heater: Regulates the temperature of the hydraulic fluid.

  • Valves: Directs the flow of hydraulic fluid and controls the system pressure.

How Does a Hydraulic Power Unit Function?

The functionality of a hydraulic power unit is centred around the principle of hydraulic force. When the motor activates, it drives the pump, which then pushes hydraulic fluid from the reservoir into the system. This fluid travels through a series of valves and hoses to reach the hydraulic actuators, which then perform the required work. After delivering energy to the actuators, the fluid circles back to the reservoir, where it's filtered and either cooled or heated before the cycle repeats.

Applications of Hydraulic Power Units

Hydraulic Power Units are the driving force in many industrial applications. Their ability to produce immense amounts of power in a controlled manner makes them ideal choices for sectors such as:

  • Industrial Manufacturing: Injection moulding machines, metal forming presses, and conveyor system operations rely on HPUs for precision and power.

  • Marine: Steering systems, stabilisers, and hoists on ships utilise HPUs for their strength and reliability in harsh environments.

  • Aerospace: Aircraft use HPUs for actuating landing gear, flight control surfaces, and other vital operations.

  • Motorsport: Racing teams use hydraulic power units for vehicle jacks and to operate various equipment quickly and efficiently.

The Evolution of Hydraulic Power and System Test Rigs

In the realm of hydraulics, hydraulic units have seen advancements that not only improve their efficiency but also their application versatility. At Zeus Hydratech, we remain at the forefront of this evolution, designing and creating hydraulic power solutions tailored to industry-specific needs.

Additionally, HPUs are instrumental in system test rigs, which perform stress testing or prove design concepts before mass production, ensuring the integrity and performance of the final product.

Maintaining Your Hydraulic Power Unit

Regular maintenance of your hydraulic power unit is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. Preventative measures such as changing the hydraulic fluid, inspecting hoses and fittings, and checking for leaks can save time and money by preventing unscheduled downtime and extending the life of your unit. A well-maintained HPU is the key to safeguarding your investment and ensuring continuous operational efficiency.
